swedish massage

Swedish massage uses slightly different techniques to the deep tissue and classic massages. It is a stimulating and invigorating treatment which is designed to relax muscles and relieve pain by applying pressure to your muscles so that they are pressed against your deeper muscles and bones. This releases toxins and encourages blood flow to the heart. It's ideal as a straightforward massage treatment for those who would like a slightly lighter touch than the deep tissue treatment. If you're not sure which treatment to go for, then please see further information on Swedish massage below or do contact us and we can talk you through the different treatment options.

more information about swedish massage

We do realise that the different types of massage with their different names can be confusing! So to help with this we thought it would be useful to explain how Swedish massage differs from deep tissue massage. Swedish massage works at a more superficial level of the body’s muscles and focuses on improving circulation and stretching muscles and joints. Deep tissue massage, on the other hand, works on the connective tissues in the body (so muscles, ligaments, tendons etc) with the goal of producing changes in movement and posture.

what are the benefits of this type of massage?

Swedish massage is a wonderful therapeutic and relaxing treatment which works on all the major muscle groups in the body and can help increase flexibility, as well as flushing the body tissues of any build-up of cellular waste products. We also use passive and active joint movements, stretching and bending your joints to increase movement and release restrictions.

Stimulating the body’s circulation, Swedish massage helps cleanse and nourish soft tissues, increasing blood supply and therefore feeding the skin and muscles with nutrients and oxygen while flushing away metabolic waste. It also relaxes and lengthens the superficial muscles and encourages flexibility. Swedish massage is great for relaxation, clearer thinking, improving sleep patterns and for the relief of muscular discomfort.

what to expect

Our therapist will carry out a full consultation with you before your treatment and it is useful to let us know then if you have any injuries or areas causing you discomfort. It is also great to know whether you like light or firm pressure – we’ll check this with you during your treatment but it is also good to know this at the outset.

Massage oil is then used to lubricate the skin and the treatment will start with a number of long, soothing strokes to get the muscle tissue warmed up so that we can then work on the muscles to release any knots or areas of adhesions. We don’t tend to include a face and scalp massage in a Swedish massage but if you’d like us to incorporate this into your treatment then do just let us know.

who is it suitable for?

Swedish massage is probably the most common type of massage in the West and it is a really good treatment to start with if you don’t get a massage very often or this is your first time having a massage.

Swedish massage is suitable for most people who are generally healthy (though there are instances where it may not be suitable and so please do check here or give us a call to have a chat about this). If you are pregnant, we offer a specialised pregnancy massage and more information can be found on this here.
